As a disclaimer, this review does reveal some plot spoilers.
Overall, this movie was directed beautifully. The cinematography was absolutely stunning. The movie starts out with Jacob Jankowski (Rob) on his way to finish his degree as a vet at Cornell University. During his final exam, the president of the university notifies Jacob that his parents were involved in a fatal car accident, leaving him with absolutely nothing. This is the catalyst that sets the plot in motion.
Jacob, losing hope, comes upon the The Benzini Brother’s Most Spectacular Show On Earth. He jumps on the train, and the rest is history. Although I do not agree entirely with showing animal abuse, nonetheless, the story was as magical as it was captivating. The fantasy of the circus has been a part of our imaginations since a young age. Now, seeing a more adult version of that fantasy, the “magic” slowly fades. Reality sinks in as “everything in a circus is an illusion.”
Robert’s performance was breathtaking. This role was truly his antidote to the Twilight fervor. I think it probably helps that he doesn’t have that awful, pasty vampire makeup on .. he actually looked tan! I don’t know what it is about a guy and animals, but it gets me every time.
There will be laughs, cries, and glimpses of anger. With this Oscar-worthy cast, you will not be disappointed. Rob deserves all the credit for making this movie what it is. I could not have asked for a better actor to play the role of Jacob–excellent!
The chemistry between Jacob and Marlena was obviously lacking. You never really got the sense that they were star-crossed lovers. At times, Reese (Marlena) was unbelievable. The way she delivered many of the lines in the beginning of the movie seemed “cheesy” (for lack of a better word). I don’t know if that was because I am so used to seeing Rob and Kristen’s chemistry, but regardless, I just wasn’t feeling it. (I had no issues with Rob and Emilie de Ravin in Remember Me).
Please, go out to the theatres and support Rob! He deserves all the attention he can get from this movie. Let’s support him!
If you have seen the movie, let me know how you liked it .. I want this to be an open (and honest) discussion about Water For Elephants.
