If fashion is a circus — and many would say it is — one of its biggest acts comes to Dallas on Tuesday.
Karl Lagerfeld, the outrageous, outspoken designer and the artistic director of Chanel, will present one of the French fashion house’s most exuberant and visual annual runway shows at Fair Park.
The fashion show is invitation-only, with nearly 900 celebrities, members of the international fashion media and top Chanel customers expected to attend, helping to raise Dallas’ profile as a serious fashion city on par with Paris and New York.
Called Métiers d’Art, the yearly extravaganza showcases the work of the 11 couture workshops that Chanel has been acquiring since 1985 — among them, a shoe cobbler, a button maker, a glove maker, a Scottish cashmere mill and an artisan company that specializes in intricate, hand-stitched embroidery.
“This is of international significance,” said Brian Bolke, owner of Dallas luxury fashion boutique Forty Five Ten. “It is an extraordinary, once-a-year experience that happens to be in Dallas. And it certainly won’t ever be back here.”
“Thankfully, Karl Lagerfeld and the house of Chanel have acted like knights in shining armor to preserve the craft patrimony of the Paris couture, the extraordinary fournisseurs whose unique skills — often passed down through generations and certainly across the centuries — provide fashion with its unique finishing touches,” said Hamish Bowles, Vogue’s international editor at large, who is attending the show. “The perfect shoe or hat, the silk flower that seems plucked from nature, magical embroideries.”
